Landline Kids

Landline Kids is a grassroots advocacy group dedicated to bringing back landline telephones as a safe and intentional way for kids to connect. Our mission is to slow things down, reduce screen dependence, and revive meaningful, synchronous voice-to-voice conversations among children, families, and neighbors—one landline at a time.

We guide families in setting up a shared, corded landline phone at home, and how to form “landline pods”—small groups of trusted households that allow kids to call pre-approved friends, relatives, or caregivers, free from texting, social media, and digital distractions.

Our goal is to give kids age-appropriate freedom, help them develop real communication skills and phone etiquette, and foster community and responsibility in a low-tech, deeply connected way.

The Turn the Tide Coalition

The Turn the Tide Coalition is a group of 20+ Maine organizations, driven by 1000+ Maine citizens. Our mission is to motivate and empower teens, parents and educators in Maine to act collectively to free children and adolescents from a childhood spent largely alone on screens, and instead promote independence, free play, and responsibility in the real world.

It all started in the spring of 2024, when several grassroots movements started in communities across the state of Maine. Early on, we realized that in order to make a difference, we needed to come together as a coalition across the state—sharing our experiences, and learning from one another.

The Turn the Tide Coalition advocates for no smartphones before high school, no social media before 16, no phones in schools, and more free, independent play. These guidelines aim to give kids the space to engage with the real world and develop into well-rounded, resilient individuals who are empathetic, curious, playful, kind, and confident in their own abilities.
